അധികാരത്തിലും ആർഭാടത്തിലും അഭിരമിക്കുന്ന മന്ത്രിമാർ

ജീവിതശൈലി വരുമാനത്തിനു മുകളിലാകുമ്പോൾ അഴിമതി അനിവാര്യമാണെന്ന് അദ്ദേഹം ചൂണ്ടിക്കാട്ടുന്നു. അധികാരപ്രമത്തത തലയ്ക്ക് പിടിക്കുന്ന ആകർഷണമാണെന്നും.

സമൂഹത്തിൽ വലിയ പാഴ്‌ചെലവും ഗുരുതരമായ ദാരിദ്ര്യവും നിലനിൽക്കുന്നു. സമ്പദ് വ്യവസ്ഥ തകരുന്നു. ഇവിടെ നടക്കുന്നത് വികസനമല്ല

A Minister sets a glittering example of simplicity and integrity in public life.

Benoy Viswom, Minister for Forest, recently ‘celebrated' his daughter's marriage. An inter-caste marriage, Hindu-Muslim. It adds up to more than a hundred lectures on secularism. People judge you not by your words, but deeds.

An honest socialist-secularist is a rarity. Mr. Viswom is one such person. In a poor country where many people go hungry, extravagant celebrations of weddings amount to delinquency.

Simplicity is sometimes difficult to practise. Yet, a Minister has set a glorious example of organising a matrimonial function — but inviting none. He informed me about it, but added: “Don't bother to come, the invitation is for information.”

Mr. Viswom's wife is a Christian. Religion, whatever the theological implications, does not divide humanity. Atheists have no caste.

Even those who have faith in religion must realise that there is only one God, worshipped in different names. Swami Vivekananda told us that every religion is the manifestation of divinity that is already in every person.

The power that creates and destroys is the same, whatever your religion.

In this sense, to me, Mr. Viswom represents a model human being, truly reflecting Sri Narayana Guru's teachings. Whatever your religion, man must be good. I recalled attending the wedding of former Chief Minister C. Achutha Menon's son. No feast, no pomp, no rituals. A cup of sweet drink, and a ‘thank you.' Mr. Viswom has excelled Achutha Menon. Even E.M.S. Namboodiripad held his son's wedding in Guruvayur, and his wife, Arya Antharjanam, a fine lady, was wearing a small quantity of gold.

No gold glittered at Mr. Viswom's daughter's wedding. This is social justice. Because dowry, gold ornaments, borrowing for celebrations, a rich feast, a large number of invitees and music, all on a large scale by poor people, ultimately ends in tragedy.

How I wish at least the communists adopted the model. I regard him a model hero, as a true patriot, a wonder in a society ruined by freebooting ways. This nation must copy him. He is a marvel of simplicity, not only in matters of matrimony but in everyday life as well.

Today many of our Ministers revel in gold and publicity, power and lavish ways of life. Corruption is inevitable when your lifestyle exceeds your income. Authoritarianism is an intoxicating attraction.

Gross waste and grievous poverty, side by side in the same society, break up its integrity. Yet, our economy collapses because of abundance in explosion into profusion and self-aggrandisement, abetted by affectation and vanity. This is not development.

Gandhiji said: “The Gandhian concept of development rejected the idea that it should aim primarily at the creation of material wealth or the satisfaction of insatiable, endlessly multiplied needs.”

“Insofar as we have made the modern materialistic craze our goal,” he wrote further, “so far are we going downhill in the path of progress.”
